Rational drug use in primary health care, indicators and intervention studies

It is necessary to study drug use due to its significance and complexity. This paper
reviews sorne studies and methods for influencing prescribing. Drug use studies are
intented to measure performance in pharmaceutical treatment and patient care practices.
Objective measures or indicators allow to make basic comparisons about practices between
individual health facilities or prescribers or between groups at a given point in time or
changes over time. In recent years several types of interventions have been developed to
improv.e drug use practices but the most effective programs utilize continuing education
methods.
