In Vibrant Matter. A Political Ecology of Things, a fundamental work in the field of “New Materialisms”, Jane Bennett develops her ambitious project of vital materialism. Faced with the traditional understanding of matter as a set of passive, disorganized, and inert objects, also supported by classical materialist thought, the author proposes a new consideration of materiality as an agent of transformation, a swarm of living and effervescent realities that suspends the distinction between the human and the non-human, and the organic and the inorganic. Hence, aware of its tradition, the book reconstructs a heterodox genealogy of material (proto)vitalists, together with whom it devises new political, affective, and ecological applications of this vibrant materialism.
