The “Mudéjar” in Claudio de Arciniega´s Work. “Doscientas tablas de taugel para la armadura de la yglesia”

Abstract

The 16th century churches of Saint Domingo and Saint Agustine in Mexico City had, as one of their main characteristics, their roofs based on wood structures. That introduces us to the problem of the persistence of these structures in the viceroyalty of New Spain´s capital city, given that in charge of both constructions was the “Maestro Mayor” of the Metropolitan Cathedral, Claudio de Arciniega, who is usually considered to be the principal representative of the Renaissance architecture in the viceroyalty. In this article, we tried to complete the study of these two buildings with particular attention to their roofs and to the explanation of the “mudéjar” matter in New Spain´s architecture.
