Abstract

Between 1957 and 1959, the interior of the Cathedral of Cuernavaca (Morelos, México) was renovated and lost its neoclassical retablos and images. The reconditioning was planned by bishop Méndez Arceo and it was influenced by the liturgical functionalism. In the public opinion of Mexico, the renovation produced a discussion among the advocates of preserving untouched the viceregal heritage and the promotors of adapting the temples to the new liturgical purposes. .

Saúl Espino Armendáriz, El Colegio de México. Centro de Estudios Históricos. Ciudad de México.

Licenciado en Estudios Latinoamericanos por la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la UNAM. Recibió en 2011 la Medalla Gabino Barreda al Mérito Académico. Ha sido asistente de inves­tigación en el Instituto de Investigaciones Esté­ticas y el Centro de Investigación sobre América Latina y el Caribe de la UNAM, así como profe­sor adjunto de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la misma universidad. Es alumno del pro­grama de Doctorado en Historia de El Colegio de México.
