Abstract

The article explores Paul Gauguin’s relationship with the country of his  childhood, Peru, attempting to answer a central question: How to connect the privileged experience of Gauguin in Lima with his later identification as “savage of Peru”? The investigation takes as a starting point the mansion he  lived in during his stay in Lima. It analyzes then, on the one hand, the  reasons why the artist never travelled back to Peru, as well as on the other  hand the role of his Peruvian identity in his artistic universe.

Cécile Michaud Couzin, Pontificia. Universidad Católica del Perú. Departamento de Humanidades Sección de Historia.

Doctora en Historia del Arte por la Universidad de Estrasburgo, Francia (2003). Sus investigaciones se centran en los intercambios artísticos: primero entre Alemania e Italia en el siglo xvii, posteriormente entre la Europa barroca y la América virreinal. Ha sido comisaria de varias exposiciones en museos y galerías de Alemania y Perú. Ha publicado los siguientes libros: Johann Heinrich Schönfeld. Un peintre allemand du xviie siècle en Italie (2006); De Amberes al Cusco. El grabado europeo como fuente del arte virreinal (2009) y Escritura e imagen en Hispanoamérica. De la crónica ilustrada al cómic (2015).
