Abstract

Rural Portuguese films produced during the New State regime stand out for the representation of campinos (cowboys) as exemplary citizens of the nation, symbolically embodied by the Ribatejo region, famous for its pastures of brave bulls. This paper presents the depiction of the rural area as a nation, through the analysis of the main taurine films, highlighting the specificities of the Lusitanian cinema and popular culture.
