Schola Cordis and its Imprint on the Cancel of Atotonilco Sanctuary (Mexico)

Abstract

This article analyzes the pictorial program designed by Neri de Alfaro for inclusion in the cancel of the Sanctuary of Atotonilco in the mid-eighteenth century. These paintings, inspired by the engravings of the Schola Cordis, were performed by Martínez de Pocasangre, but later restorations and repainting not too fortunate distort the original work. However, it has been possible to reconstruct the project of father Neri, whose purpose was to invite the faithful to pious meditation.
