Abstract

The author expresses gratitude for the invitation from the university magazine 'Modulema' to participate in their January issue and reflects on cultural diversity in Melilla. He highlights that the city is a model of coexistence based on tolerance and respect among different cultures and beliefs, a tangible reality manifested in everyday human interactions. This model is not the result of political intervention but rather the spontaneous and continuous interaction among citizens in various aspects of daily life.

The author advocates for the term 'Melillense culture' to describe the invisible social norms that guide coexistence in the city. These norms have been collectively built without the dominance of one group over another, valuing the contributions of each community. Examples of this coexistence include the joint celebration of festivities such as the Three Kings Parade, the Hindu Holi, the Jewish Hanukkah, and Muslim prayers, which have transcended private barriers and integrated into the general cultural heritage.

Finally, the author emphasizes that cultural diversity in Melilla is a hopeful reality, protected and promoted by the local administration. Activities and annual agreements with accredited entities, as well as the future creation of the Oral Heritage Museum, are examples of how this diversity is encouraged. The author concludes by thanking the University of Granada for its dedication to researching the intangible heritage that defines Melilla as a community.
