Abstract

This article addresses the topic of the loss of the mother tongue in ethnic minorities in Russia. Today, Russian has replaced the Kalmyk language, and the use of Russian among the Kalmyk people is similar to the use of English among natives of Nigeria or India. However, the author argues that the disappearance of the vernacular language for the majority of the Kalmyk people does not mean the loss of their national identity.
