Abstract

This article aims at analyzing the different lexemes corresponding to the seme "rage" in Seneca's Medea. This seme is fundamental in the tragedy as in its Euripidean predecessor (which is taken as a point of reference). The seme recurrence in the text is remarkable, and certainly higher than that in the Greek play. The tragedy presents a peculiar treatrnent of the theme whose analysis is worked on too with the same philosophical reflection that Seneca makes in his treatise De Ira, in which the binomial set furor-bona mens plays a central role. The subject of rage is fundamental to ponder the modalities of the action of Medea's character.
