Abstract

The recent development of sociolinguistics and pragmatics lends itself to an application of sorne ideas to the analysis of the language of Roman drama. The statistical model proposed by sociolinguistis as W. Labov or J. Milroy is applied to the plays by Terence in order to show patterns of behaviour as to elements such as sex, age and class. The concept of imperative modifiers is also analysed.
