Abstract

The classical tradition has passed down to us an image of Carthage heavily influenced by its long-standing conflict against both Greeks and Romans. Two aspects of this image may be highlighted: its unchanging character, and the reduction of its social reality to just the domination of merchants and mercenaries. This reductionist view is presented as a counterimage that of offered by the Greek and Roman city-state: citizens and civil armies.
