Medea de Fermín Cabal. Estudio de sus fuentes clásicas

Abstract

As a drama of the classic repertoire, Medea has enjoyed a higher number of adap­tations and recreations in Western literary tradition. The aim of this article is to go into the version which the Spanish dramatist Fermín Cabal released in 1998 and to relate it to the classical precedents, i.e. the versions of Euripides and Seneca, through a detailed analysis of the classical components which contains. It puts a special emphasis on showing the changes and innovations which the author introduces in the form of adaptation. On the one hand, the present prevailing classical substrate takes the spectator back to that enigmatic and intriguing Classical Age. On the other hand, the great originality updates undoubtedly the drama and reaches it closer to the latter 20^th century Spanish spectator’s context and taste.
