Abstract

In Hor. Ars P. 123 a connection is established between Medea and Ino; the fi rstone is described as ferox, the second one, as fl ebilis. According to Horace these are thefi tting adjectives for these two heroines when tradition is to be followed (famam sequere,v. 119). This article intends to analyze the preserved corpus of texts which speak aboutthe fi gure of Ino and tries to check if it is true that tradition really delivers the image ofa fl ebilis Ino. The results leave no margin for doubt: the image of Ino can be describedas fl ebilis or ferox, and in both cases the poet remains faithful to the traditional portrayalof Athamas’ wife.
