Abstract

The article examines page 394 (Stephanus edition) of Plato's Cratylus to elucidate the network of analogies between word production and ancient medicine. Specifically, in addition to linguistic evidence that attests to Plato's allusive intention regarding the language of medicine, the article also analyzes the same underlying explanatory model applied to the analysis of words and drugs. Substantial identity (dynamis) and secondary differentiating factors (ta prosonta) explain why only the physician and the philosopher (with the nomothetes as a counterpart) possess the ability to comprehend, elaborate, and effectively employ drugs and words, respectively.
