Abstract

The Orchards of Murcia is an agricultural landscape with great cultural, environmental and socioeconomic values, which, despite being an essential part of Murcian people's identity, has been suffering an ongoing degradation since the 60's. This situation has been further aggravated in the last decade by a growing urban speculation and the lack of protection and conservation measures. This degradation is now reaching a turning point, and in case of continuing as presently, this cultural landscape will eventually turn into a large wasteland with consequent numerous social and environmental problems. In view of the situation, citizens themselves and several associations have mobilized to demand its protection. Besides, they are proposing measures and projects for the conservation and enhancement of this historic agricultural area.
