Abstract

Portuguese women in contemporary society frequently work outside the home, while fulfilling their tasks as household organizers and providers of family support.

In spite of European Union standards and Portuguese legislation within the scope of the Labour Code, as well as the protection of females both as workers and mothers, the promotion of gender equality, the conciliation of family and professional life, and the simultaneous creation of legal spaces for male intervention in the family, women are still perceived as playing a leading role in family cohesion.

This being so, what chances are there left for a working mother, throughout her professional life, to develop her personal projects, which need not be limited to work and family? Due to a greater longevity, these women will make up the majority of older people, and will be in need of care.

Because of the contribution higher education can offer in training people in this particular field of study, we consider that there is room to think in terms of an adequate instruction of women, according to the specificities produced by the inequalities they face in life.
