Abstract

This paper examines one of the most representative works of baroque sculpture in Granada, the ‘Virgen de la Soledad’ by the royal sculptor José de Mora. The perspective of this analysis differs from the usual iconographic description, in that it contextualizes the sculpture with in the history of devotional images and describes the role it played in the disputed establishment of one of the last religious foundations in Granada: the Oratory of St. Philip Neri (1671).
