Abstract

This paper deals with the significance of the aesthetic criteria which were imposed on society during the first years of Franco's regime, once the Civil War was over and the totalitarian regime established. A new relationship between Art and State lay at the basis of these criteria, and artists' work was required, given the constant intervention of the state in artistic matters, to conform to a series of concepts such as those of Order, Unity, Empire, Hierarchy, Propaganda, Revelation... Ample documentary evidence of this relationship is provided.
