Abstract

The hypertensive action of phenylephrine, metoxamine, naphazoline and phenylpropanolamine, administered orally or intravenously, was studied in rats, together with the action of these drugs on isolate aorta and atrium. Phenylephrine was shown to be the most potent hypertensive agent via both routes of administration. The findings suggest that both a direct vasconstrictor effect and an increase in heart rate are likely to be in volved in the hypertensive action of phenylephrine and phenylpropanolamine.
