We study the relaxing effect of ethanol on smooth muscle, refered to the contraction of rat isolated ileum induced by increasing doses of acetylcholine and calcium chloride in a calcium free medium after depolarising ileum with potassium. The results obtaines show that ethanol has relaxing activity on the ileum "in vitro". The mechanism of this effect seems not to be mediated through muscarinic receptors (acetylcholine) but very probably related to an antagonism towards calcium.
