Abstract

The modified starches consist of a group of products that may be used as auxiliary substances in tablets. In this paper three types of starches obtained under diflerent hydrolysis conditions were tested as binding agents in the elaboration of tablets, in order to determine the influence that the degree of this modification exerts on the binding capacity of these
products. lt was concluded that the degree of starch hydrolysis has an influence to bear on its binding properties and that the so denominated starch II was lound to be the most appropriate binder, given that tablets containing 10 and 15% concentrations gave higher hardness and HFR values together with lower percentages lor Iriability and abrasivity.
Conversely, the binding power of the hydrolysed starch was lound to be related to amylose content, independently of the rheological properties of its gels.
