Abstract

Bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) were measured by

dual energy X-ray densitometry, on the left femur of27 term and 44 premature appropiatefor-

gestational-age infants. Anthropometric measurements, serurn calcium and phosphorus

concentrations, and alkaline phosphatase activity were also evaluated. Premature infants

had lower serurn calcium and phosphorus concentrations (p<0.05), and higher alkaline

phosphatase activity (p<0.01) than term infants. Values ranged from 0.04 to 3.05 g for

BMC and from 0.26 to 0.81 glcm2 for BMD at birth. Premature infants had lower BMC

and BMD (p<0.01) than term infants. BMC correlated with serurn phosphorus (r=0.23),

alkaline phosphatase activity (r=-O.23), gestational age (r=0.78), weight (r=0.81), and length

(r=0.77). BMD correlated with gestional age (r=0.64), weight (r=0.61), and length (r=0.59).

The study emphasizes the significant effect of gestational age on the bone mineralization
