The protein KMP-1I is one of the major constituents of the kinetoplastid-membrane. The high degree of homology in the amino acid sequence of its 92 residues together with the fact that the molecule i8 present in all species so far analyzed suggest that the protein is of importance for the kinetoplastid-biology. Noteworthy is the high degree of alpha-helical conformation within its secondary structure and its stability even at temperatures that normally denature most proteins. Expression of the protein is under tight stagespecific control limiting its presence to the promastigote stage of the parasite where it seems to form part of a structural or functional compartment close to and along the flagellum. KMP-ll is also an interesting protein from the immunological point of view since it could be shown to be highly antigenic and to estimulate proliferation of lymphocytes during Leishmania infections.
