As stated by renowned authors such as Trexler (124), in climate fiction literature the flood scenario is predominant. Nevertheless, in Spanish literary works classified as cli-fi, the drought is a frequent theme. Drought is a deeply-rooted national fear still much present in our collective thought, besides, if we consider the impacts of climate change, the way it affects water cycles is rather alarming. This article will contextualize the current situation as well as the perspectives of the climate future concerning water cycles in Spain, in order to later explore examples of national narratives belonging to the category of climate fiction which present features related to the consequences of long periods without rain or to the total lack of it. In this context we will present this phenomenon as portrayed in two novels El salario del gigante (José Ardillo, 2011) and Por si se va la luz (Lara Moreno, 2013), and in Rosa Montero’s trilogy Lágrimas en la lluvia (2011), El peso del corazón (2015) y Los tiempos del odio (2018).
