Abstract

In this paper I argue that there is in Galáxias a question about the potency or impotence of words when connecting with things, and that this book itself reviews some possible philosophical and metapoetic answers. I analyze the presence of this exploration and its development through a rhetorical analysis of three pairs of tropes (tropes that are textual and, in the case of the first pair, also graphic): white-empty versus black-full, speech versus fate, and detritus versus jewel. The first members of these pairs are associated with silence and linguistic distrust. The second members, with faith in the connection between signifier and signified. I propose that these pairs, which might seem dichotomous, end up becoming imprecise, thus evidencing how the lyric self undergoes an internal debate that is resolved only in the affirmation of the indeterminable.
