This article sets out the singularity and the philosophical and political issues at stake of the egalitarian poetics developed by Rancière in the course of his writings, and what distinguishes it from that of the philosophers of the generation that preceded him. It explains how the philosopher's thinking on his writing develops in reaction to the masterly and inegalitarian postures exemplified by Louis Althusser and Pierre Bourdieu. It examines what Jacques Rancière has to say about his use of free indirect speech or what he calls “rephrasing”, and about his “method of the stage”. Rancière's comments on this occasion sheds light on the way in which he represents his role or his place in the field of thought, how he determines his ethos as philosopher-writer or philosopher-researcher and how he positions himself in relation to literature.
