Abstract

In this article we present a case study of apainting of the Virgin of la Antigua that belongs to the collections of the Colonial Museum in Bogota, since its foundation in 1942. From the analysis of a 1674 description by the Andalusian chronicler Juan Florez de Ocariz, we discuss the iconography and typology of the canvas as a way to understand the importance that the miraculous virgin of Seville had in the Spanish Conquest and, in the conquest and colonization of the New Kingdom of Granada, both thanks to its portraits.
