Abstract

This article examines urbanization in nineteenth-century colonial Havana. It argues that expansion of the city outside of the walls was a colonial effort aimed at extending the administration’s authority over a city whose demographics were in flux. Urban measures were predicated upon the historical importanc?e of urban spaces to colonial rule.
