Abstract

The earthquakes are phenomena that have been closely linked to the Chilean culture, since over the centuries they have defined the development of this country, determining its economic growth and social welfare. It is necessary to understand that in Chile the earthquakes are a frequent thing for the geographical disposition of the territory and, in spite of the constant occurrence of these natural events, the santiaguinos always have been exposed to his consequences; therefore, these processes have exercised a notable influence in the way of designing, of constructing, of living and living in the city.

Alfredo Jacob Palacios Roa, Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez Departamento de Historia y Ciencias Sociales. Facultad de Artes Liberales Santiago, Chile.

Doctor en Historia por la Universidad de Sevilla, España. Magíster en Historia de América por la Universidad de Sevilla y en Historia de Chile por la Universidad de Chile. Licenciado en Educación por la Universidad Católica Raúl Silva Henríquez (Chile). Autor de varios libros y artículos sobre la historia cultural y social de Chile y América, destacándose en el estudio de las catástrofes provocadas por los riesgos naturales, especialmente terremotos y tsunamis, y las catástrofes antrópicas.
