Abstract

This article is an analysis and an interpretation of Yūsuf Idrīs' dramatic work al-Farāfīr (1964). The piece constitutes a very important play in modern Arabic and Egyptian theatre. Inspite of that we observe sorne characteristics of the occidental dramatic trends from the ancient Aristofanes' comedies and the commedia dell'arte to the modern works of Pirandello, Artaud, Brecht, Ionesco, Beckett y Arrabal, it's not a handicap for Yūsuf Idrīs and his wish of creating an original Egyptian play with local spirit. He wrote it basing, among others elements, on thesāmir, a popular night entertaiment in Egypt.
