Abstract

Tiús article deals with Yūsuf Idrīs' dramatic dialogue, following al-Saˁīd Muḥammad Badawī's language levels classification in his book Mustawayāt al-ˁarabiyya al-muˁāṣira fī Mīsr (1973). In ldrīs' plays predominate the three colloquial levels that Badawī had distinguished, particularly, the standard colloquial level found in daily conversation (4) and the colloquial level of illiterate people (5), in harmony with the characters, the atmosphere and the context inwhich the works occur. But we can also find the intellectuals' colloquial level (3),the contemporay standard Arabic one (2) and, at times, the pure classical Arabic one (1).
