Abstract

F. de Herrera writes a short essay about the eclogue starting from Garcilaso's practical works. First he gives us a theoretical exhibition about it following the line of the established theorists, specially Mintumo and Escalígero. Afterwards, he gives a broad outline ofthe history ofthis genre up to his time. He starts with the Greek authors, then he goes to the Latin authors, after that, he focuses on the Italian ones, above all, on those he preferred and finally he finishes with Garcilaso's eclogues. Basically, Herrera is justifying his own pastoral production written in the l ine of Garcilaso and the Italian poets of
eclogues.
