Abstract

Sappho is the only woman-poet of Greco-Roman antiquity who managed to occupy a place of real relevance in Greek and Roman literature to the point of assuring herself topicality and attention in later historical periods. Her frequent presence in poetry written by women in the XIX and XX centuries is particularly remarkable, poetry written by women who remember and imitate the woman-poet from Lesbos because they consider her a literary authority, a support for the woman-authors of the XIX century who sufferred "anxiety ofauthorship", as studied by Sandra M. Gilbert and Susan Gubar. From this point of view, we study in this paper the presence of Sappho and of her literary work in the hispanic women-poets Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, Carolina Coronado, Rosalía de Castro, Josefa Ugarte Barrientos and Eduarda Moreno Morales (XIX century); Carmen Martín Gaite, Clara Janés and Alfonsina Stomi (XX century).
