Abstract

Augustine's hermeneutics hasbeen considered as the model of the allegorical exegesis in the Fathers of the Church. The modern critic reception has understood it as an example of finalist interpretation. This judgement derives from the importan ce that the doctrinal tradition exerts on the Scriptures in the Augustine's thought. Such importance is articulated through the allegory. In this article, 1 try to rethink the reading of this method from a different comprehension of the "tradition" and also from the evolution experimented by the concepts of "allegory" and "History" in Augustine's thought.
