Abstract

At the very end of the 4th A.D. century, the sophist Libanius of Antioch, who gave a strong commitment to the defence of values given by traditional pagan education and religion, wrote his speech In Honour to the Kalendae in order to set himself up as a defender of a dying paganism. The afore-mentioned speech, together with one of his class exercises (progymnasma), can be considered as a pamlhet supporting pagan culture and religion, and showing disagreement about Christianism, as a historical source to describe a religious celebration, or as a model of the restricted imperial-age rhetoric.
