Abstract

This paper aims to review a literary topic which appears in a number of works in modern literature at the centre of which the emperor Julian the Apostate appears as a key figure. These works describe Julian's initiation in the Eleusinian and Mithraic Mysteries as a way to portray him as an excessively credulous character.
