Abstract

Learning to live together in school is one of the basic objects of the Spanish education system. The aim of this paper is to analyze the social competence of primary school students from the autonomous city of Melilla (Spain) with different socio-cultural characteristics. In order to carry this out, 546 students from two public schools with different social and cultural characteristics took part in the study. The S2 Scale of the Behavioral Assessment Scale for Children and Adolescents (BASC) was the data collection instrument used. In general, the results show a pattern of differing social development depending on the sociocultural characteristics of students in both schools, which shows the desirability of developing preventive programs for the promotion of social skills in schools as well as taking into account different social, cultural and family variables that may be mediating this process.
