Abstract
Francisco Fleta Polo, viola player and composer born in Barcelona on 25th September, 1931, belongs to the group of viola teachers who emerged as a consequence of the educational reform that took place in Spain in 1966, when viola studies became completely independent from those of the violin. In order to solve technical deficiencies and intonation problems among his students, Fleta devised a set of methods which were sequenced in several volumes, ranging from the simplest exercises to those that can be used by the professional in his/her daily practice. Fleta’s work is divided into three blocks: the new system for the study of fixed positions, the study of double stops and the studies of scales and arpeggios, the first being the most important. We will then describe the basic principles of this method which lays the foundation of the modern school of this instrument in Spain.
