Abstract

The present article aims to offer a critical review of Armand Mattelart and Ariel Dorfman’s (1971) book How to Read Donald Duck. First, we will approach the issue of its reading from a political perspective, that is to say, the Donald Duck study is both scientific and meant as a political platform for social change. So we will outline the epistemological criticisms received by the authors because of their “reading” of this Disney cartoon. Secondly, we will take a brief journey through the book, examining its central theses. Then, we will summarise the criticisms levelled at Mattelart and Dorfman mainly by Charles Bergquist’s reading. We end with some conclusions.
