Abstract

The interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary approach in human sciences research is a trend that has been established progressively over the last century, in contrast to highly specialized research in an increasingly restricted field. The development of disciplines such as the history of ideas and mentalities, comparative literature, the study of human sciences within a socio-historical context, and the emergence of cultural studies are manifestations of this trend. However, although this interdisciplinary focus may appear positive and enriching, it is not exempt from difficulty and a sometimes-negative valuation from ‘specialists’. The aim of this paper is to present, based on my personal experience, the challenges and difficulties of multidisciplinary investigation in musicology.
