Abstract

Scientific literature analyzes the areas in which Art Education has an impact and stresses the importance in the academic, psychological, social and cultural development of people (Hargreaves; Marshall; North, 2005; Hargreaves; North, 2001); the social values which are revealed (Gardner, 1994, 2000); the relationship between cultural aspects and the teaching methodology and evaluation of  various artistic expressions (Gardner, 1995); and its important role in education from the earliest years of life (Lowenfeld; Lambert, 2008).

In Mexico, Art Education at primary school comprises two main areas: Musical Education and Visual Arts. This paper aims to determine the university training of teachers takes place in both areas as well as in the specific area.

In order to do this,  91 teachers took part (48 in Music Education and 43 in Visual Arts) from the borough of Chihuahua (Mexico).As a data collection instrument, two questionnaires were designed and implemented, each directed at an area of Art Education.
