Abstract

The aim of this work is to analyse the theoretical, social and emotional conceptualization of love in western culture, a social and cultural construction which has affected women’s education and their way of life throughout history. The western idea of “romantic love” has been useful for power structures in order to perpetuate a patriarchal social system that promotes inequality between men and woman. Such ways of love are learned from the family nucleus, friends and cultural products. We analyse the myth of romantic and patriarchal love from texts and feminist lectures with the aim of understanding its origin and continuation in the present.
Romantic love is one of the most universal topics in cultural products, from literature to films, generating speeches with such a high impact on the subjectivity and identity construction. During the difficult period of adolescence, peers and social pressure are strong determinants in the development of identity construction. Therefore, talking about Sexual and Affective Education, film analysis can became an interesting tool when aiming at educating free and critical students.
