Abstract

During the academic year 2014-2015, the Superor Music School of Ceuta undertook a new project: the creation of a Music Classroom for adult students. The aim of this project is to spread musical culture and raise awareness of our institution to a greater number of people. There are several factors which have contributed to the birth of this project.

Due to the low application rate by young students, for some years many of the available places remained vacant, so the board of directors of the Music School decided to extend admission to adults with musical interests. This situation allowed the transmission of musical teaching to groups of adult students. Nevertheless, once they had finished elementary tuition, they faced the decision of whether to continue with their training – which requires many hours of dedication in the professional programme – or to abandon their learning process, as well as their relationships with peers and teachers. In most cases neither option seemed appropriate.

In this paper, we intend to explain how this Music Classroom for adult students’ project has developed, since we believe that it has been a very positive experience for the whole educational community as well as for the expansion of music culture.
