Abstract

Communication of bad news (CBN) is a major challenge for professionals, especially in neonatal units, whose obstacles need to be better understood. This study aimed to describe the experience of carrying out the CBN process and its training from the perspective of health professionals in the neonatal context. Qualitative research was carried out, with the participation of 23 professionals, who answered a semi-structured interview script. Data were analyzed using the IRaMuTeQ software and content analytics. The results showed that most health professionals consider CBN a challenging task in the neonatal context; that such communication of news involves several adversities and not just the communication of death news; and that they were not trained for this process, although they recognize the importance of training professionals. The conclusion is that continuing training is important to provide professionals with technical and socio-emotional skills for NMC, improving the quality of communication and relationships with patients and their families.
