Abstract

This brief paper presents a concise description, based on a small sample, of the use of prepositions by deaf individuals who are users of Portuguese Sign Language (LGP) as their first language. The fact that Portuguese relies heavily on functional words, unlike LGP, which, due to its visual modality, does not rely on this resource, led us to question the root causes of the deviations that Deaf individuals, who use Portuguese as their second language (PL2), demonstrate in the contextual use of the Portuguese prepositional system. To do this, we analyzed a set of unscripted sentences and presented our proposals regarding the use of prepositions. We also suggest activities that can promote the learning of PL2 for deaf students, to encourage independent and accurate writing.
