Abstract

The purpose of this article is to show the potential of the illustrated image as a tool for education. The illustration of books has traditionally been approached from the perspective of the ideal complement for children's literature. However, in the last decades it has experienced an important impulse towards its inclusion in didactic materials of different types and from all fields of knowledge, increasing its quality, its presence, and its level of interaction with other resources. Therefore, in this study we delve into the historical evolution of illustration, understood as a tool for learning, as well as its possibilities. We propose, preferably to teachers (but not only to them), that the illustration has some very useful specific characteristics to help students' learning and that they must know how to use it for that purpose, starting with the comparison between didactics illustrated materials from past and present times.
