Abstract

It is frequently the case that painting serves as a guide to the study of the architecture of a particular period or region. In this paper we examine the paintings from the Middle Ages to the 18th century in the permanent collection of the Venetian Academy, with special reference to those of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. We hope to show how they can serve as a complementary source for the understanding of architectural tendencies, of types of town planning and of the general organization of the region of North ltaly.
