Abstract

This article analyses conceptually and plastically the maintenance and development of the post-mortem portrait in the first half of the 20th century, taking the painter Ferdinand Hodler as a basic model. An author whom we position as the backbone of the study, exemplifying with his own life and art the back-and-forth path, as he is a producer of this genre of portraiture and, in turn, was a recipient of it upon his death. In this way, we propose a linear and (at the same time) analytical arrangement in which we critically examine both the exercises that Hodler carried out within this genre, whether commissioned or of particular interest, and those that were executed on him. All of them in the sphere of the intimate and familiar, at his wake and funeral.
