Abstract

Like most of the representatives of the Spanish Golden Age - with the exceptions of Murillo, Ribera and Velázquez- Alonso Cano, considered by critics as one of the crucial figures of this school, was generally unknown in Europe until the beginnings of the War of Independence. The present paper deals with his critical reputation in Europe from the l81h century to Louis Philipe's Spanish Gallery (1838-1848).
